To celebrate the release of KROST’s new Spring/Summer 2022 collection, inspired by the beauty of community, gardens and natural life, we have teamed up with social commerce platform Basic.Space to host our volunteer community event with the New York Restoration Project (NYRP).
The community service event took place on February 23rd, at Sherman Creek Park, located on the Harlem River waterfront running from West 202nd to West 206th Street. Sherman Creek Park has for the past 20 years been the beneficiary of the NYRP’s efforts to reclaim and refurbish public parkland citywide. Here, we were able to activate their communities, inviting them to participate in this one-day event to clean up the park and renovate its gardens as part of the organization’s continued efforts to create a safer, healthier and happier city.
“Our mission as a brand has always been to help create an inclusive world where people stand together, accept one another, and support each other. We’re thrilled to partner with NYRP, who shares a similar commitment to ensuring that all New Yorkers have equal opportunity to access the essential benefits of nature, one of the most fundamental liberties we have as humans,” said Samuel Krost, founder and creative director of KROST.
The group helped clean up 120 lbs of trash at Sherman Creek Park—a former illegal dumping site that has now been converted into 15-acres of productive and beautiful green space for the Inwood community. This space includes the Harlem River Greenway, Swindler Cove, and our Riley-Levin’s Children Garden. Since Sherman Creek is threatened by climate change-induced erosion and sea-level rise, the trash your team cleaned up along the Harlem River not only diverted harmful litter from a major NYC waterway but also helped ensure the resiliency of our parks and, the success of our Living Shoreline project (learn more here).
Additionally, we helped remove 150 lbs. of invasive plant material. These plants threaten native biodiversity and hinder the growth of native plants that help prevent shoreline erosion.
NYRP cares for 52 community gardens and 80 acres of parkland citywide. We support communities in activating these green spaces year-round through urban agriculture and public programs including live performances, food distributions, and other neighborhood-centered activities. We also educate thousands of public school students about environmental stewardship with lessons ranging from wildlife identification and composting to gardening and food preparation. Each year we also refurbish and create entirely new gardens at nearly 30 schools, community-based organizations, senior centers, and public housing associations. In communities that have been most deeply impacted by COVID-19, these transformations make space for neighbors to grow food, safely hold programs outdoors, and find much-needed respite.
